Michael Devinney

MD, PhD

Dr. Mike Devinney is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology at Duke University. He completed his undergraduate degree at University of Pittsburgh, followed by obtaining his PhD in neuroscience and his MD through the University of Wisconsin Medical Scientist Training Program. His research aims to understand risk factors and mechanisms of postoperative delirium and cognitive dysfunction. He currently is investigating the role of untreated sleep apnea, blood-brain barrier breakdown, and neuroinflammation in postoperative delirium and cognitive dysfunction. Additionally, he is leveraging unbiased cerebrospinal fluid proteomics to characterize the neuroinflammatory responses after surgery that is associated with delirium, including activation of complement and coagulation cascades. Overall, the goal is to uncover mechanisms and risk factors for postoperative delirium and cognitive dysfunction that could be addressed to reduce these frequent postoperative complications.
