Foundations in Delirium

Course facilitator: Jose Maldonado

Do you want to master the essentials in delirium? This interactive course is designed to provide attendees with foundational understanding of delirium principles across various clinical settings. The course will cover the following areas: delirium epidemiology; key DSM-5-TR and ICD11 features of delirium, and delirium subtypes; morbidity and mortality associated with delirium; predisposing and precipitating factors; state of the science regarding delirium neurobiology, including clinical associations and opportunities for clinical advance; common delirium assessment and screening tools and new technologies; the relationship between delirium and cognitive outcomes; and evidence-based non-pharmacological and pharmacological management approaches. Attendees will be encouraged to engage, ask questions and learn through applied case discussions.

Mentored Workshop for Career Development and Grant Writing

Course facilitator: Benjamin Chapin, on behalf of the ADS Research Committee

Are you an early career investigator interested in becoming an independent investigator? Through a mix of brief presentations and one-on-one breakout sessions with established delirium researchers matched to the mentee’s research interests, this workshop will provide hands-on guidance in developing career development awards on delirium. Selected topics will include: 1) framing your research question, 2) focusing your aims, 3) how to personalize your mentor team, and 4) how to get the most out of your mentor team. Prior to the workshop, registrants will be invited to provide an aims page and a career development plan for review with mentors. Participants who are not yet working on a grant but would still like to learn are welcome to join this workshop.

Putting Science into Practice: Overcoming the Sludge and Making it Stick

Course facilitator: Leanne Boehm

Are you looking to transform delirium practice at your institution? This half-day workshop will teach you how to apply a quality improvement principles and translate delirium science into sustainable practice. The workshop aims to meet you where you are in your implementation journey. Participants will learn from case studies and success stories illustrating effective strategies for overcoming common implementation barriers—the “sludge.” This course will also feature small-group problem-solving sessions, and structured peer learning exercises The goal of this workshop is to equip participants with practical tools, including a personalized implementation plan, to navigate organizational resistance, engage stakeholders, and create lasting changes. Prior to the workshop, registrants will be invited to submit a brief project goal summary using your provided template.

Leadership and Advocacy Workshop

Course facilitators: Heidi Smith, Heidi Lindroth, Partha Thirumala

Are you interested in driving systemic change in delirium care? Join the 2026 ADS Leadership and Advocacy workshop to build core skills in health advocacy, leadership, fundraising, and strategic project development to improve delirium care. Through didactic sessions, TED-style talks, and structured project brainstorming, participants learn to define problems, articulate purpose, engage stakeholders, and plan sustainable advocacy efforts to improve delirium care across clinical and policy settings. Workshop registrants will be invited to apply for one of 2 ADS Advocacy Fellows on key Advocacy Initiatives. ADS Advocacy Fellows will receive free registration for this workshop and a complimentary Gala ticket, participate in 2026–2027 mentorship sessions, and receive a travel stipend to present their advocacy Initiative at ADS 2027 in Orlando.
