MD PhD

John Newman, MD, PhD is a geriatrician, basic scientist, and educator at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and in the Division of Geriatrics at UCSF. As a physician-scientist, Dr. Newman's goal is to translate what we are learning of the pathways that control fundamental mechanisms of aging into therapies that will improve the health and preserve the independence of older adults. His basic science efforts at the Buck Institute focus on how ketone bodies function as energy and signaling metabolites in the aging brain and Alzheimer's disease. He also leads a clinical-translational program to understand how aging mechanisms drive delirium, to better understand and guide new therapies for this devastating disorder. He is a member of the Bakar Aging Research Institute at UCSF and the UCSF Older Americans Independence (Pepper) Center, and a leader of the national Geroscience Education and Training Network. His clinical work is on the inpatient geriatric medicine and internal medicine services at the San Francisco VA.
