Dr. Smith is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) where she practices pediatric cardiac anesthesiology. She received her medical degree from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine and her postgraduate residency training in Pediatric Medicine and Anesthesiology and fellowships in pediatric critical care medicine and pediatric anesthesiology at VUMC. She also completed her Master of Science in clinical investigation (MSCI) at Vanderbilt University as a scholar in the Vanderbilt Mentored Clinical Research Scholar Program (VCRS). Dr. Smith is a physician-scientist focusing on advancing understanding of the epidemiology of delirium among critically ill infants and children. She has created and validated delirium screening tools for ICU delirium including the Pediatric and Preschool Confusion Assessment Methods for the ICU (p/psCAM-ICU) for use in neonates to adolescents. Dr. Smith was recently awarded R61/33 funding through NHLBI to conduct a randomized controlled trial comparing dexmedetomidine versus midazolam and outcomes including delirium, duration of mechanical ventilation, and functional, psychiatric, and cognitive recovery. Dr. Smith has served as Co-Chair of the Society of Critical Care Medicine ICU Liberation Committee and the Pediatric Pain, Sedation and Delirium Guidelines
Taskforce, and is a board member of the American Delirium Society.
